Teen on bicycle struck, faces charges

TONAWANDA, N.Y. — A 16-year-old out for a bicycle ride quickly discovered how things can go from bad to worse.

It started when Ashley L. Vandervanter ran a red light and was hit by an oncoming car. Her bike struck the right front portion of the car, bounced up and smashed the windshield. She injured her head, hip and left eye, according to an incident report, while the driver reported no injuries.

Vandervanter was taken to a hospital for treatment and was listed in serious but stable condition.
