ELWOOD, Ind. —
Cheating spouses. Screaming obscenities. Throwing punches.
All behaviors you’d associate with tabloid-style daytime talk shows like “Jerry Springer” and “Maury.” Two Madison County men got to experience all that and more.
David Powell, 30, of Elwood, and his brother Kevin, 25, of Anderson, will appear on an episode of “The Jerry Springer Show” that will feature cheating spouses. In David’s case, he tried to win back his estranged wife, Kendal Martin of Grayville, Ill., from her boyfriend Preston Mier.
Powell said he pitched the idea to producers of “Maury” with the original intention of being on that show. When the idea was turned down in February, he went back to life and forgot about it.
“Out of nowhere, a week later I got a call from producers of ‘Jerry Springer’ asking if I wanted to be on the show,” Powell said. “I couldn’t believe it.”
Powell said he and Martin got married in September 2012, and claimed that within four days of their marriage she started having an extramarital affair with one of Powell’s friends. Powell said she’s since moved back home to Illinois and started dating Mier.
Attempts to contact Martin and Mier were unsuccessful.
Powell said he went on the show with the intention of winning back Martin. He asked his brother Kevin to join him for support.
A few days after making arrangements with producers, the Powells, Martin and Mier were being flown to Stamford, Conn., to the set of the show.
“I had never been on a plane before. They put us in a nice hotel. We were eating nice the entire time. It was great,” Powell said.
Kevin Powell echoed the sentiment. “This was really the first time I’d been away from home for any extended period, so that made it even more special,” Kevin said.
