More drug suspects arrested in Mingo County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Mingo County authorities are going after more suspected drug dealers three weeks after the fatal shooting of Sheriff Eugene Crum.

Media outlets report a grand jury this week returned indictments against at least 16 people on prescription drug-related charges, and several suspects were arrested Thursday.

Crum had served three months as sheriff when he was shot on April 3. His campaign promise was to clean up Mingo County's pervasive drug problem, and he made good on that with several dozen drug-related arrests as part of Operation Zero Tolerance.

Dave Rockel is Williamson's police chief and commander of the Mingo County Drug Task Force. He says many of the investigations that led to Thursday's arrests started during Crum's time as sheriff.
