The last day of the year is one of the biggest days for charitable giving.
According to figures from the nonprofit services provider Blackbaud, holiday giving provides a spike in year-end giving. Last year, online giving reached its high point in December, and Blackbaud processed more than $88 million in donations on the last day of 2012. That was a 60 percent increase over 2011.
Experts say this is the biggest time of year for donations, both for tax purposes and because of generosity around the holidays.
This year, some charities promoted “Giving Tuesday” on Dec. 3. Blackbaud says online giving that day was up 90 percent.
According to last year’s data, charities that benefit the public and society led the overall rise in giving during the holiday season.
