9 Va. localities to be treated for gypsy moths

BLAND, Va. — Seven counties and two cities in Virginia will be treated for gypsy moths in June.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says aerial applications of a mating disruption pheromone are tentatively scheduled this week in the cities of Suffolk and Chesapeake.

Augusta, Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Patrick, Rockbridge and Wythe counties are scheduled to be treated the week of June 16.

The department says in a news release that gypsy moth caterpillars are leaf eaters that can defoliate entire trees.
