Former DMV manager arrested on gun charge

BLUEFIELD, Va. — A former West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles manager who pleaded guilty in Mercer County to embezzlement has been arrested in Tazewell County, Va., on felony charges including grand larceny and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Rhonda Ann Thomas, 47, of Bluefield, Va. was arrested the evening of June 23 at her home along Blue Ridge Road, Sheriff Brian Hieatt of the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

“We received a call about an argument going on between a boyfriend and a girlfriend,” Hieatt said.

Thomas was also charged with a misdemeanor, assault and battery, Hieatt said. She was held without bond Tuesday in a Tazewell County jail. Deputy Mike Steele was the investigating officer. No shots were fired.

In May, Thomas was sentenced in Mercer County Circuit Court. She had pleaded guilty previously to embezzlement. She was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to pay  $13,0000 in restitution.

Thomas, who was the manager of the state DMV office in Princeton, was arrested in 2013 after the West Virginia State Police Princeton detachment conducted an investigation.
