W.Va. treasurer delivering coins, jewels to Nitro

NITRO — State officials are heading to Nitro bearing jewels and coins for the mayor.

West Virginia State Treasurer John Perdue is delivering the unclaimed property to Nitro Mayor David Casebolt on Wednesday. The coins and jewelry were left unclaimed in a bank safety deposit box under his name.

The treasurer’s office says it is rare when an asset is returned to its rightful owner or heirs because of long dormancy periods.

In West Virginia, unclaimed property or financial assets also include insurance policies, paychecks and stock dividends that have not been cashed in.

The assets must go undisturbed for a specific period of time before they are designated unclaimed.
