McDowell County woman arrested on multiple charges after fleeing from police on foot

SKYGUSTY — A local woman who was arrested after state troopers investigated a burglary in progress now faces charges including burglary and grand larceny.

Senior Trooper B.D. Gillespie and Trooper C.A. Dunn were dispatched to the Skygusty area of McDowell County after there was a report about a burglary in progress, according to a statement issued by the West Virginia State Police Welch detachment.

When the troopers arrived, Haley Cox, 27, of Skygusty allegedly ran behind the residence and into a wooded area. After a short foot pursuit, she was apprehended and arrested. Clothes and jewelry had been piled on the home’s front lawn. The home’s owner estimated that the items were worth more than $1,000.

Cox was charged with burglary and grand larceny, both felonies, a misdemeanor charge of trespassing, and fleeing a trooper on foot.

After the arrest Monday night, Cox was arraigned Tuesday before Magistrate Steve Cox. She was remanded to the McDowell County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
