W.Va. US senator wants to quicken Afghanistan exit

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin is seeking a faster exit of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

The Democrat from West Virginia spoke on the Senate floor Thursday, helping lead efforts to pass a resolution to end the war in Afghanistan by 2014.

President Barack Obama plans to reduce troop strength until U.S. forces are home by the end of 2014.

The Charleston Gazette ( reports that Manchin wants troops to return home at a faster pace, provided their security isn't jeopardized.

Manchin noted that the war has already surpassed the Vietnam War as the longest in U.S. history.
