RICHMOND, Va. —
A $44.2 million public-private housing complex that will cater to nontraditional students at West Virginia University is expected to open in the fall of 2014.
College Park, a 224-unit mixed-used complex, is being built on about 9.6 acres owned by the university. It will have one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom apartments, along with laundry facilities, a community center and other amenities, WVU said Friday in a news release.
College Park is aimed at students at the graduate and professional level, international students, veterans, and students and employees with families.
“When completed, this will be another walkable, accessible housing option - particularly for non-traditional students and families wanting the freedom to live off-campus, but the conveniences of being close-by,” Dean of Students Corey Farris said in the release.
The housing complex also is a part of an effort to revitalize run-down neighborhoods around the downtown Morgantown campus. It replaces outdated and unused housing that recently was demolished.
City Manager Jeff Mikorski said the complex will help centralize students near the campus and within the city, which could reduce traffic congestion during peak travel times.
“We also appreciate the reuse of an existing WVU property that has been under-utilized for a long time,” Mikorski said in the release.
The university has a 40-year-old lease arrangement for College Park with American Campus Communities, which obtained a construction loan with United Bank for the project. ACC and WVU will jointly manage the facility.
WVU also is planning a $70 million housing and retail complex in Morgantown’s Sunnyside section called University Place. Farris said that University Place will cater students of a more traditional age.
