Portsmouth council OKs backyard chickens — but not eggs

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Portsmouth residents can now legally keep chickens at their residences. But they can’t sell eggs.

City Council has approved an ordinance that allows up to six chickens per family residence.

The Virginian-Pilot  reports that the ordinance received unanimous approved Tuesday.

The ordinance requires coops to be set back at least 15 feet from property lines. It also prohibits selling eggs.

Chickens had been allowed within city limits until 2010. That’s when a zoning ordinance revision intentionally omitted allowing chickens in the city.
