Moose on the loose

WINTHROP, Minn. — Bullwinkle has gone AWOL.

A moose, far astray from his northern Minnesota habitat, has been making the rounds in new territory.

Two sisters who were out picking raspberries spotted the animal in southern Minnesota.

“It was just such a shock,” Karen Klenk said of the encounter. “And he was the most beautiful sight,” added Vicki Mueller.

Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist Kurt Haroldson said it is usually bull moose who amble off.

Years ago a Minnesota moose made it as far as Missouri, Haroldson said.

He said roving moose often meet their ends when they get hit by cars or are illegally taken by hunters.
