A winter storm is now bearing down on the region creating slick road conditions.
A winter storm warning for Mercer County remains in effect until 1 p.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service is calling for between 3 to 5 inches of snow and winds gusting between 25 to 30 miles per hour. Strong winds and blowing snow are expected to continue through tonight.
The weather service is asking motorists in Mercer, McDowell, Monroe, Tazewell, Giles, and Bland counties to use caution on roadways due to ice. According to the weather service, areas of northern Tazewell County and Mercer County “will see the most extensive snow cover on roadways as an inch or two occurs in these spots through late this morning.” Strong winds may also make travel difficult, especially on the Interstate 77 corridor.
Authorities in Virginia had several reports of minor accidents between the Pocahontas exit of U.S. Route 460 and the West Virginia state line, though most accidents were cleared quickly and no injuries were reported.
