Mercer County law enforcement gave an all clear at PikeView this morning after searches of both the high school and middle school turned up no weapons. The search and police presence at the schools were in response to a rumored threat on social media.
Mercer County Sheriff’s Department deputies remained at PikeView Middle School late Monday morning while West Virginia State troopers were on hand at PikeView High. Officers conducted searches of both schools prior to the start of classes.
Chief Deputy D.B. Bailey said officers will remain on the grounds of both schools through the day.
Sheriff Don Meadows said the search and law enforcement presence was out of an abundance of caution in response to some posts on social media concerning a threat of a shooting today or Tuesday at the high school.
More than 300 PikeView Middle School students and 40 percent of students at the high school were absent Monday, according to Rick Ball, assistant superintendent of elementary the Mercer County School Board.
