Large crowd voices opposition to dog park proposal for Bluefield

BLUEFIELD — A large crowd voiced opposition at the Bluefield Board of Directors meeting Tuesday to a proposed dog park at the old Fairview School location.

Parks and Recreation Director Dwight Godwin gave a presentation to the crowd about the dog park and provided information on how the city would go about building the park and the rules and regulations that would have to be followed by residents using the park.

Will Gordon, a concerned citizen, said, “I think the idea needs to be studied and developed. I don’t object to the idea just the location.”

Other residents said they were OK with the concept, but opposed to the location.

“No dog park should be adjacent to a residential neighborhood,” South Bluefield Neighborhood Association President Blaine Braithwaite said.

There needs to be some questions answered by an insurance company about the liability in case a dog or child gets attacked, Braithwaite said.
