Heavy snow falling across the region; multiple accidents reported by officials

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

BLUEFIELD —  Four Seasons Country was hit by heavy rain, followed by rapidly falling temperatures that brought first sleet and later snow to make driving conditions extremely hazardous in the region.

Multiple vehicle wrecks were reported on U.S. Route 460, I-77 and side roads throughout the community. Most area schools had been canceled Thursday morning, keeping many travelers off the road.

The winter storm warning for Mercer, McDowell, Tazewell, Bland, Giles, Wythe and Monroe counties generally calls for accumulations of 5 to 9 inches of wet heavy snow with the potential for more than a foot in higher mountainous elevations. Forecasters also are warning of the potential for power outages due to the heavy snow threat.
