PRINCETON — The load on two tractor trailers traveling southbound on Interstate 77 near Athens caught on fire Thursday afternoon.

Both tractor trailers were carrying bale for cardboard. State police and the truck’s owner speculate that a tossed cigarette or cigar may have ignited one of the loads. One truck pulled over after the driver realized it was on fire, and embers ignited the second truck. The second truck was taken to Exit 14. It was not as badly burned, said Tim Farley of the Bluestone Valley Fire Department.

The Princeton Fire Department was handling the fire on that truck. The fire was reported around 3 p.m. on Exit 14 of I-77.

A small section of grass leading up to a bank also has caught on fire. Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

Traffic is still moving southbound on I-77 southbound despite the fire.
