BLUEFIELD, Va. —
Plenty of high fives and fist bumps were exchanged Tuesday when students received the honors they had earned during the 13th Annual Tom Colley Reading Bee.
Sixty-four students in 16 teams competed at Bluefield College and demonstrated their reading skills in contests including comprehension, spelling and vocabulary, editing, and impromptu, said Kathleen Osborne of Tazewell County Schools. In the impromptu competition, students had to quickly come up with credible endings when the plot of story suddenly changed.
Richlands Elementary School was the overall winner among fourth grade teams. The team included students Gavin Cox, Jacob Maggard, Corbin Singleton and Noah Spencer. Their coach was teacher Lisa Johnson.
In the fifth grade level, the overall winner was Tazewell Elementary. The team included students Parker Hieatt, Daniel Mullins, Kiera Pugalee and Hadrian Reeves. Their coach was teacher Vivian Saunders.
Photographs of all the teams that competed in this year’s reading bee will appear in Sunday’s edition of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph.
