UPDATE — Police in Bluefield were still working to sort out the details Tuesday of an early morning armed robbery at a city video lottery parlor that apparently led to a shooting a short-time later at a local hotel.
The armed robbery was reported at 2 a.m. at Patty’s at the Bluefield Plaza on Cumberland Road, according to Lt. G.W. Lightfoot of the Bluefield Police Department. The shooting was then reported at 3:20 a.m. at the Economy Inn, also on Cumberland Road.
Lightfoot said Larry Kidd, 29, of Bluefield, was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery. Jason Penley, 24, of Bluefield, was shot once and airlifted to a hospital in Kingsport, Tenn. Lightfoot said Penley also was later charged Tuesday with first-degree robbery.
Lightfoot said Penley sustained one gunshot wound, and was still being treated at the hospital late Tuesday. The man is expected to be extradited back to West Virginia.
Lightfoot said an ax handle and knife was brandished at the video lottery parlor. He said a “pretty small amount of money” was taken from the establishment. No employees or customers were injured in the robbery.
Police didn’t immediately confirm Tuesday who shot Penley. However, Lightfoot said authorities were not actively searching for a shooter.
