Second moonshine suspect surrenders

WELCH — The second suspect who was wanted in connection with a moonshine/marijuana cultivation arrest earlier this week in the Paynesville area of McDowell County surrendered to authorities on Thursday afternoon, according to a press release from the McDowell County Sheriff’s office.

Lewis Harper Lester, 70, of Jolo turned himself in at the sheriff’s office in Welch at about 2:30 p.m., according to a press release issued by the sheriff’s office. Lester was charged with four counts of delivering a controlled substance and one count of conspiracy.

His bond was set at $75,000, and he is being held in the McDowell County Holding Unit awaiting transport to Southwestern Regional Jail.
