First-degree murder trial begins for woman charged with the death of War mayor

WELCH — The first-degree murder trial of Rebecca Hatcher, who is charged in connection with the death of her father-in-law and long-time War Mayor Dr. Thomas Hatcher, is underway in McDowell County.

A jury was seated just before 1 p.m., and opening arguments are now underway. Prosecuting Attorney Ed Kornish is representing the state in the case.

Rebecca Hatcher, 32, of War, and her brother, Earl J. Click, 27, of Grundy, Va., are both charged with one count each of first degree murder and conspiracy in the death of Tom Hatcher. Investigators allege that the two defendants also stole $1,100 from the mayor to purchase drugs.

Tom Hatcher was found dead shortly before noon on July 17, 2012 by city of War employees who went to check on him when he didn’t appear for work.

For testimony, and more details, from the trial, see Wednesday’s edition of the Daily Telegraph.
