Spaulding denies seeking sexual encounter with child

PRINCETON — A Mercer County man facing charges of first-degree sexual assault and 50 charges of possession of child pornography testified in his own defense today in Mercer County Circuit Court.

John Spaulding, 41, of Montcalm, denied that he had ever asked his former friend, Kim Cox, 38, of Nemours, to send him explicit photographs of her daughter. He also denied while being questioned by his attorney, Harold Wolfe, that he had met with Cox in February 2012 at a Bluefield motel to have a sexual encounter with a 3-year-old girl.

While being cross-examined by Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney George Sitler, Spaulding denied that any explicit text message traffic found on computers had anything to do with him. The defense has argued that Cox created the messages allegedly between her, Spaulding, and a fictional woman, Anna, that she had created.

The prosecution rested its case. Judge William Sadler told the jurors before dismissing them this afternoon that they could possibly begin their deliberations Thursday.
