One person is dead and another critically injured as a result of a single-vehicle accident late Monday night on Lorton Lick Road.
Lt. Joe Parks, with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department, said excessive speed was a factor in the crash, which occurred around 11:24 p.m. one mile down Lorton Lick Road.
Parks said the vehicle, a 2013 white, Hyundai Electra, was traveling toward Montcalm when it came into a curve at a high rate of speed. "It came around the curve sideways," he said. The vehicle then went off the road, "slammed through a telephone pole, hit a brick wall and rolled toward a house. While rolling, the vehicle struck the porch, and took the entire porch off. It also damaged a vehicle parked at the house."
Parks said the driver off the vehicle was killed at the scene. A passenger was airlifted to a Roanoke hospital and is in critical condition. Names of the victims are not being released at this time, but Parks said both are males in their 20s.
The impact of the crash broke the telephone pole, and resulted in two nearby residents losing electricity, Parks said.
Parks said a witness at the scene "narrowly avoided the crash," and watched it unfold in his rearview mirror.
Mercer County Sheriff Don Meadows will release more details of the crash later today. Check back with bdtonline.com for more information as it becomes available.
