Gas station gutted by fire in Tazewell County

A former gas station in Tazewell County was destroyed by fire Monday.

The fire was reported at Dunford Roofing, which is located at the site of the old Gas ‘n’ Guzzle in the Gratton area, at approximately 2:50 a.m. this morning, according to Cleafork Volunteer Fire Department Chief Russell Stowers.

Crews with the Clear Fork Volunteer Fire Department, Tazewell County Fire and Rescue, town of Tazewell Fire Department, Baptist Valley Fire Department, Thompson Valley Volunteer Fire Department, and Jeffersonville Rescue Squad were all dispatched to the scene.

The Virginia Department of Transportation temporarily closed Virginia Route 61 while crews worked to extinguish the blaze, dispatch said. The majority of the crews cleared at 6:20 a.m. but firefighters from Clearfork stayed on scene until about 2 p.m.
