New trial date set for woman charged with conspiracy in connection with slaying of War mayor

WELCH — After a brief 35 minute hearing in McDowell County Circuit Court this morning, Judge Rudolph J. “Rick” Murensky II scheduled the trial for Rebecca Lynn Hatcher on conspiracy charges related to the death of War Mayor Tom Hatcher for 9 a.m. on June 2.

Murensky also ruled during a suppression hearing that a key piece of evidence that had been excluded from her first-degree murder trial — a video-taped statement that Rebecca Hatcher made to deputies following her arrest — can be used in her conspiracy trial.

A jury found Rebecca Hatcher not guilty of first-degree murder last year in connection with the death of her father-in-law Tom Hatcher. During the earlier trial, the jurors were unable to reach a verdict on a second charge of conspiracy, forcing Murensky II to declare a mistrial on the conspiracy indictment count.
