Nature’s Air Conditioned City frozen over as mercury plunges below zero

BLUEFIELD — No lemonade today in Bluefield with sub-zero temperatures in the city and surrounding area. While Bluefield posted a 4 below zero reading the low in Greenbrier County was tops — or bottoms — in the region with a negative 11 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va.

While Greenbrier County had the lowest morning temperatures, Tip Top, Va., in Tazewell County posted 10 below zero, according to the weather service, and unofficial readings of minus 10 below zero came into the newsroom from Egeria, and Grayson County, Va. Lester’s Ridge in Buchanan County, Va., had an 8 below zero reading.

The record low for Jan. 24, was 18 below zero in 1963, according to the National Weather Service.
