Three charged in connection with death of a child in Tazewell County

TAZEWELL, Va. —  Three people have been arrested and charged in connection with the death of an 8-month-old boy in Tazewell County.

Deputies have arrested Star Adams, Monica Walker, and William “Willie” Hilbert, no ages available. Walker and Hilbert have been charged with causing serious injury to a child under the age of 18, which is a Class 4 felony, according to a Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office press release. Star Adams has been charged also with the abandonment of the child, which is a Class 6 felony.

On Wednesday morning, the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office 911 Center received an emergency call of an infant child who wasn’t breathing. The 8-month-old male child was taken to Clinch Valley Medical Center where it was determined that the child had already passed away. The child’s name and additional details about him were not being released at this time.

The 911 call and concerns from the medical center prompted an investigation into the child’s death from the Tazewell County Sheriff and the Commonwealth Attorney’s Offices along with the Department of Social Services and the Virginia State Police, according to the press release. The sheriff’s office was also assisted by investigators with the Richlands Police Department.

Adams, the mother, had left her child with Hilbert and Walker at the home they share in the Richlands area, according to Tazewell County Sheriff Brian Hieatt.

On Wednesday morning, Walker took the child to Clinch Valley Medical Center. When they arrived at the hospital, the child was already deceased, Hieatt said. An emergency room doctor contacted authorities when he saw the extent of the child’s injuries.

Adams is facing a possible penalty of one to five years, and Walker and Hilbert are both facing possible penalties of two to 20 years. Hieatt said other charges may be possible after the results of the autoposy come in.

Four search warrants have been executed at two residences in the Richlands and Road Ridge areas and on one vehicle, and as a result of this investigation three individuals are being charged, according to the release.

Adams, Walker, and Hilbert are being held without bond by the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority in their Tazewell facility. An active investigation continues and there are additional charges pending based on the results of the autopsy and continued investigation, according to the press release.
