Mercury plunges below zero again, but big weekend warm-up coming

BLUEFIELD — Could there be light at the end of the arctic tunnel?

The mercury plunged below zero again this morning across the region with outside air readings that ranged from 1 below zero to a bone-chilling 7 degrees below zero. A high of only 18 degrees is expected today, and the mercury will fall to 4 degrees above zero tonight.

Then a slow warm-up will finally begin.

Temperatures will climb close to 40 degrees Thursday, and a high of 42 is expected Friday. The mercury could reach 52 degrees by Saturday. And temperatures are expected to remain in the low 40s through early next week — despite a couple of chances of mixed precipitation, including rain, sleet, freezing rain and snow.
