A Mercer County Circuit Court judge has ordered that two people facing charges of first-degree murder be held without bond at a regional jail.

Steven McDonald, 32, of Bluefield and Latasha Marie Kanode, 23, of Princeton, were arrested Monday in connection with the shooting death of Sherry Matthews, 44, of Princeton. Matthews was shot and killed early Monday morning at her apartment in the Lilly Grove area near Princeton. A second person, Edward Lee Thomas, 41, of Princeton was shot and injured. He was taken to Princeton Community Hospital where he was later treated and released.

McDonald and Kanode both face charges of first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, burglary, conspiracy, and attempted murder, said Sheriff Don Meadows at the time of the arrests. Robbery was the motive behind the incident.

Mercer County Circuit Court Judge Derek Swope saw McDonald and Kanode in separate hearings. In both cases, he ordered that they be held without bond at the Southern Regional Jail in Beaver.

Preliminary hearings have yet to be scheduled in Mercer County Magistrate Court. By law, preliminary hearings must be conducted within 10 days unless a person charged waives the hearing or the time limit.
