Train derailment reported in Tazewell County

RICHLANDS, Va. — Tazewell County authorities are reporting a train derailment in the Jewell Ridge community.

A train derailed near the second railroad crossing in Jewell Ridge, the sheriff’s department is reporting on its Facebook page.

Robin Chapman, a spokesman for Norfolk Southern, said seven cars from an empty coal train with four engines and 179 empty hoppers derailed.

“There were no injuries and no hazmat releases,” Chapman said. “No effect on operations.”

Chapman said the cause of the derailment is still under investigation. He said NS crews hope to have the site cleared by Wednesday.

Chapman said the train was traveling from Norfolk to Grundy.

There may be some traffic delays as more locomotives come in to help correct the problem, according to the sheriff’s department.

Officials are asking motorists to look at taking alternate routes between Jewell Ridge and Richlands.
