I-77 northbound to remain closed today as DOH crews work to reopen corridor before Easter

BLUEFIELD —  Both northbound lanes of Interstate 77 remain closed today as crews work to clear away rubble from a massive rock slide.

Contractors with Vecellio and Grogan, Inc., have been working to clear the roadway since a massive rock slide occurred near mile marker 3 on Wednesday, March 20.  Tom Camden, district manager for the Division of Highway’s District 10, said work has picked up and crews are hoping to have both of the northbound lanes open in time to accommodate Easter weekend traffic.

Camden said the DOH is asking motorists to be especially careful around flaggers working on traffic control.

“Be cautious of other vehicles, especially since some are unfamiliar with our area,” Camden said. “Keep a special eye out for our flaggers. We want everyone to watch out for our flaggers, especially at the interstate interchange in Princeton. They are putting their lives in harm’s way for the safety of others. Be patient with them and allow them to safely do their jobs.”
