U.S. Attorney takes stand with law enforcement against illegal prescription drug distribution

BLUEFIELD — Booth Goodwin, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia, came to the Elizabeth Kee Building in Bluefield this morning to show his support for the on-going law enforcement effort known as the Bluefield Pill Initiative. During the press conference, Goodwin said the three-county initiative has resulted in more than 50 arrests in a two-year period.

Goodwin said the initiative was launched two years ago in response to the community’s concern about the rapid growth of crimes related to prescription drug abuse. He said that “substantial criminal organizations who used to deal in crack cocaine” have entered the illegal prescription drug distribution business.

Along with the 16 individuals named in a 51-count federal indictment on Wednesday, Goodwin said another 5 indictments were opened today.

For more on this story as well as the new indictments, see Friday’s edition of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph.
