Singing Wal-Mart cashier heading to awards show

CHARLESTON — A Wal-Mart cashier from West Virginia whose singing became an Internet sensation is heading to this weekend’s Academy of Country Music awards show.

During an appearance with CNN’s Anderson Cooper in February, 21-year-old Kayla Slone received an invitation to Las Vegas from country music star Dierks Bentley.

She’s taking her husband, coal miner David Slone, to Sunday night’s show at the MGM Grand. The show being co-hosted by Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan on CBS.

Slone’s popularity rocketed earlier this year after videos of her singing from the checkout lane at the Logan Wal-Mart were posted online.

The Matewan native performed at the Grand Ole Opry last month in Nashville, Tenn.

Slone tells the Charleston Daily Mail she hopes her singing leads to a lifelong career.
