Peter Marshall to host ’West Virginia Squares’

CHARLESTON — Longtime “Hollywood Squares” host Peter Marshall is returning to his home state for a West Virginia version of the TV game show.

The Huntington native will tape four episodes of “West Virginia Squares” at the Clay Center on Monday and Tuesday as part of Charleston’s FestivALL celebration.

The game show will feature questions about state music and history. West Virginia Public Broadcasting will film and distribute the shows to state schools.

The 88-year-old Marshall tells the Charleston Daily Mail the local game show “sounded like a fun thing to do.”

FestivALL’s website says among the celebrity squares are Wheeling native and “Three’s Company” star Joyce DeWitt, “America’s Got Talent” winner Landau Eugene Murphy Jr., and Charleston Mayor Danny Jones.

The public is invited to attend the shows and admission is free. One of the shows Tuesday night that won’t be taped will be an adults-only show.

“I think it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Marshall said.

The tic-tac-toe game involves each square on the board filled with a celebrity where contestants attempt to get three in a row by guessing whether the celebrity answers a multiple-choice question correctly.

Marshall attended Huntington High School and eventually got into radio and began performing in night clubs, films and musicals.

Becoming a game-show host “was just a freak accident,” Marshall said. “It was something I didn’t really want to do.”

He taped more than 5,000 episodes of “Hollywood Squares” from 1966 to 1981.

West Virginia Music Hall of Fame director Michael Lipton said he came up with the “West Virginia Squares” idea after Marshall was inducted into the hall last fall.

“The majority of his career was singing and acting, but this is certainly what people know him for,” Lipton said.
