Fiscal cliff

Get the job done already

— — Here is a special holiday message for U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., U.S. Sen Jim Webb, D-Va., U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith, R-Va., U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., U.S. Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va., and President Barack Obama. Don’t plan on leaving Washington for Christmas until we have a deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff of expiring tax cuts and across-the-board spending cuts looming at the end of the year.

Going home for Christmas with work still to be done would be unacceptable. And the same goes for the rest of Congress.

Americans — and residents right here in southern West Virginia and Southwest Virginia — are outraged over your inability to compromise. We can’t risk sending America back into another recession, and having millions of Americans face the troubling reality of higher taxes and lower pay checks come Jan. 1, because of bitter bipartisan politics and silly political games.

You were sent to Congress and the White House with a job to do. Now get the job done.

And let’s face the facts. The election is over. Most Americans are tired of the same old political games. Tired of the finger pointing. Tired of each political party blaming the other political party. They want to see compromise. They want to see action. After all, it is the individual purse strings and pocket books of millions upon millions of Americans that you are now messing with.

If it is your plan is to send America over the fiscal cliff as part of this silly political game, be prepared to face the wrath of millions of angry voters when they are forced to pay more in taxes, and take home pay is reduced. This isn’t funny. It isn’t a game. And no one is laughing.

Your actions are hurting America. They are also hurting businesses right here in southern West Virginia and Southwest Virginia. That’s because some Americas are afraid to lavishly spend this holiday season — as they don’t know what the new year will bring because of your inability to reach a deal on the fiscal cliff. And when Americans spend less, retailers suffer and so does the national economy. And without a deal on the fiscal cliff, most experts are warning that another recession will occur.

Is this what you really want? Your actions would make us think so. Your actions resemble school yard antics — children who are unable to get along with each other and end up fighting in the playground. That’s not only shameful, it’s embarrassing.

Lame duck Congress or not — get the job done. Get it done now. That’s what you were elected to do. And don’t even think of going home for the holidays until you have a deal signed on the dotted line. Then, and only then, should the lights be turned off in Washington for the Christmas break.
