Medical upgrade

BRMC expansion good for region

— — A $5.1 million expansion project announced earlier this week for Bluefield Regional Medical Center should be viewed as a positive for health care services in the region.

Bill Hawley, chief executive officer of BRMC, said Tuesday that the hospital is investing $5.1 million to help create two new critical care units — intensive care and coronary care — at BRMC. A certificate of need for the project has been issued to the hospital by the West Virginia Health Care Authority.

With approval from the Health Care Authority, Hawley says the hospital is now proceeding with construction plans. A statement released by the hospital says the new units will be side-by-side on the hospital’s fourth floor, and will include a shared, central nursing station that will allow visual observation of all patient rooms to enhance patient monitoring.

The statement adds that the all-private patient rooms with restroom facilities will be large enough to accommodate equipment, physicians, hospital staff and visitors and support infection control. It adds that chart updates by nurses and physicians will be facilitated by documentation pods adjacent to patient rooms.

The hospital will continue normal business operations without interruption during the construction phase. BRMC’s current ICU and CCU will continue to operate on the second floor until the new units are ready.

The project construction is expected to begin later this summer. It is anticipated to be completed by the spring of 2014. The expanded critical care units should help to enhance emergency care for citizens across the region. The investment on the BRMC campus by Bluefield Hospital Company LLC is welcomed.
