An ongoing campaign to help Bluefield’s Wade Center merits public support. The 81K “Run for the Kids” initiative seeks to raise $81,000 to assist with continued daily operations at the Wade Center, including the vital after-school programs.
The Wade Center exists on donations and fundraisers. Grants are awarded for specific projects, such as new computers and an updated security system, all of which are necessary for the success of the program, but ultimately do not pay the monthly bills, according to Wade Center Executive Director Jessica McDaniel
Without community involvement and support, McDaniel says officials will not be able to continue the life-changing work that happens within the walls of the old school building. “God is at work here and the children are flourishing just as much in their souls as in their school work, and tummies are being filled,” McDaniel said in a recent letter to the editor published in this newspaper.
As part of the Run for the Kids campaign, officials are looking for 1,000 people who are willing to commit to a donation of just $27 per month in order to help officials at the Wade Center meet operating expenses for the year. McDaniel says a $27 per month donation will help 90-plus children with their homework assignments while also ensuring the youngsters receive a USDA approved meal and snack every day, along with the opportunity to participate in choir, acting, fitness, computer, art, Bible classes and other programs offered by the Wade Center.
Keeping the Wade Center open, and the after-school program in operation, is important to families across the region. The after-school program is designed to help children and teens grow physically, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually.
The programs at the Wade Center also give kids a chance to interact with role models and mentors who teach healthy living, peaceful conflict resolution, good decision making, goal-oriented behavior and more.
Anyone wishing to help out with fund-raising efforts can call the Wade Center at 304-323-3777. Donations can be made by going online to wadecenter.com and clicking on the donation box or by mail at P.O. Box 777, Bluefield, WV 24701.
The Wade Center is an invaluable resource for area families and youth in the greater Bluefield area through its after-school programs and various other services.
Keeping the after-school programs going is important. If you can help, please consider supporting the Run for the Kids campaign.
