Health center on a fast track

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

— — Construction on the new Mercer County Health Department is coming along well, and the work may be completed well ahead of schedule.

Most of the actual work on the building is already finished. However, the county must now go out to bid for furniture and the outside landscaping work, according to  Mercer County Commission President Mike Vinciguerra.

“I have toured it several times myself and I can say it’s going to be really nice,”  Vinciguerra said. “Everyone has done an excellent job of keeping us informed and keeping the building just as it was on the architect’s drawings.”

Once the new health center is open, it will also bring foot traffic back to the old Blue Prince Plaza area. Many long-time residents remember that this shopping center used to be a bustling center of commercial activity with the old Hill’s Department Store, the old Ponderosa Steakhouse, and a number of other smaller businesses. The hope is that the new health center could spur additional growth at or near the shopping center in Green Valley.

Most of the buildings in the old Blue Prince Plaza are currently being rented out for storage. But if a prospective business were to express an interest in the site, the county would work with the owner of the shopping center to market the site, according to Mercer County Development Authority Director Janet Bailey.

We are glad to see the health center construction wrapping up. And we would love to see renewed commercial growth in the area of the old Blue Prince Plaza.
