Marek signs with the Sooners

Southmoore grappler wanted to stay near home

(Continued)

MOORE —

Marek is coming off a junior season in which he took second at state and was the runner-up at the National High School Coaches Association Wrestling tournament. He earned his state title as a sophomore.

“Nathan is one of those guys who is an all around wrestler,” Southmoore assistant coach James Seeney said. “He does wrestling. That’s what he comes into the room to do. He is not here for anything else. He’s got one sport. Everything that he’s done since I’ve seen him in junior high has been about wrestling. He was going to go to college and wrestle. That was his goal.”

That attitude and focus is a main reason Marek, who began wrestling in second grade, is the first Southmoore wrestler to earn a D-I wrestling scholarship. He’s also set the bench mark for other wrestlers to follow in the program.

“It’s unbelievable,” George said. “When you have a kid that works as hard as he has. He has a lot of great credentials. All of those have been right here. He didn’t move in or transfer.

He started wrestling with us and he’s one of our first year products. We are really, really proud of him. Anytime you can get a kid to go D-I, it’s a really special thing. It just doesn’t happen very often.”

Marek has set high expectations for himself at every level. That includes what he wants to make happen once he joins the Sooners.

“When I’m there, I feel like I’m part of the college,” Marek said. “ I started thinking, if I can compete with these guys now, what’s it going to be like when I’m in college.

So there are definitely NCAA All-American like goals I want. But that’s not something I’m setting right now. I’m still in high school. I always had the mindset that I really like to win and don’t like to lose.”
