Bluefield Daily Telegraph

— A selection of reader comments from our Facebook page last week:

On a story about the Bluefield Beavers celebrating their state basketball championship:

• Congrats to all the high school teams in the area. You don’t have to win to be champions! — Angel H.

On a story about a fatal accident in Mercer County:

• Prayers going up! — Jessica A.

• Prayers for the family! — Barbara P.

• A lot of action all around Thornton Avenue today. I guess everybody better be careful up there. Sorry for the loss of life — Renee H.

On a story, with photos, about a massive rock slide that blocked Interstate 77 and caused significant traffic delays:

• Get the local National Guard unit up there and fire a couple 3.5 bazookas into the hill, bringing it down and no one is at risk, then shove it out of the way — Herman S.

• Unless some proactive action is taken soon, I’m afraid the same thing is going to happen on Route 460. There is already a large amount of boulders that have fallen onto the bank on the eastbound side. Drive with caution! — John W.

• Pray no one gets hurt! — Bonnie M.

• Wow! — Alex C.

• Was that a submarine that the truck (stuck in traffic) was hauling? — Neil S.

• It looks like a Civil War era or World War I. Cool! ... Aha, a replica of the Hunley. I was going to say Hunley but it is in Charleston, S.C.! — Bz T.

On a story about the pit bull issue not being an action item at the next Bluefield city board meeting:

• The current owners have shown they are not responsible by their lack of following the current law. Zero registrations, come on. They don’t register them because either they are irresponsible or they don’t want their insurance carrier to know about them as they are not as hesitant as the city to punish them. These dogs are killers by their very name. The same folks that whine about cradle-to-grave care wants the city to hold their hand now. They should be glad the current ordinance hasn’t been enforced instead of using it against the city — Ricky J.

• Pit bulls are not the problem — their owners are. They are a protective breed of dog — the same as shepherds, Rottweilers and Dobermans. Maybe the prospective buyer of one should be made to take a responsible pet owner course before they can buy one, and a training school for the dog needs to be required so the dogs know what behavior is expected of them. — Carol F.

• Let’s sneak this one in like they did the last one. I propose an amendment to make all real estate agents be responsible to inform all clients about the pit bull ban. By the way, if there were no pit bulls registered, how many tickets were issued? I think we need a law that says you can’t pass a new law until you have enforced the old laws — Steven T.

• Enforce compliance of existing ordinance and move on to pressing issues — Mark W.

On a story about a lawmaker’s concern that crimes committed while on drugs could offer a free pass from jail under legislation designed to ease overcrowded prisons:

• Crime is crime no matter when it is committed and this is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever heard of. Want to decrease overcrowding then get the death penalty for applicable crimes and quit giving criminals a life in a resort for the wrong they do ... — Charles B.

• ... It is a free pass and a loophole for anyone to commit any crime and completely get away with it. All you have to do is say, “I was on drugs at the time of the crime.” Let’s all move to West Virginia — we can rape, steal and pillage at our heart’s content ... because we have a free pass! — Drema A.

• Ask yourself who are the lawyers and politicians in West Virginia, and indeed you will have your answer — Richard B.

• Shoot the killers, child molesters, rapists, and then work the sweat out of the druggies. Make them see that they don’t want to go back — Mary N.

• This has to be the dumbest thing I have seen yet. Wonder who is going to get their pockets lined from this? — Marina C.

• Excuse me? This country is going to “stupid” itself out of existence! — Cathy H.

• If this bill passes I do not see a need for law enforcement or jails. Think of all the money the state could save and put in their pockets — Delcia A.

• Just another way to let the judges play God and decide who gets jail and who gets rehab. This is a bad idea — Steven T.

• I believe this will be a pass to commit crimes sooner than later — Chrissy C.

On a poll question asking what is your favorite Easter candy?

• Cadbury Caramel Eggs — Tara C.

• Peeps! — Lisa B.

• Hershey’s marshmallow eggs :) Roxanna B.

• Russell Stover Chocolate Covered Coconut Eggs ! — Barbara W.

• Hershey’s peanut butter eggs — Sherry B.
