College hoops season winding down in region

HUNTINGTON — Marshall will put the finishing touches on its regular season with two of its last three games on the road, starting today with a 2 p.m. at Houston.

The game can be seen statewide on WCHS, with David Saltzman and former Houston coach Tom Penders calling the action.

The Thundering Herd will play its final home game of the season Wednesday against Southern Miss before closing things out Saturday, March 9, at East Carolina.

The Conference USA tournament will run March 13-16.

Marshall (12-16, 5-8 C-USA) has had a week between games, having not played since last Saturday’s 52-48 loss to UAB. The Herd is just 1-9 on the road this year.

Like most teams in the conference, the Cougars (15-11, 4-9 C-USA) have had much success at home, boasting an 11-4 record at Hofheinz Pavilion. They have lost three straight games, most recently a 63-53 loss at UTEP on Wednesday.

It will be a battle of the two best rebounding teams in the conference, both averaging 38.6 boards per game. Dennis Tinnon leads Marshall with 9.3 rebounds, while Houston’s TaShawn Thomas is second in C-USA with 9.7 rebounds per game.

Marshall is led by junior forward Elijah Pittman, who leads all C-USA newcomers with 15.7 points per game. He has led the Herd in scoring in seven of its last eight games.

DeAndre Kane averages 14.4 points, while D.D. Scarver is third on the team with 12.6 points per game. Kane also averages a league-leading 7.0 assists per game, seventh in the country.

West Virginia, which lost to the Jayhawks 61-56 on Jan. 28, has dropped three straight and four of its five games. The Mountaineers will conclude the regular next week at Oklahoma and by hosting Iowa State.

The Mountaineers are one of the few teams in America whose leading scorer is not in double figures. Eron Harris is contributing 9.3 points a game, while Aaric Murray is providing 8.8 points and 6.2 boards.

Kansas, which has won five straight after a three-game skid, has been led by Ben McLemore (15.9 ppg) and Jeff Withey (13.5 ppg, 8.5 reb).

Erick Green continues to lead the nation in scoring for the Hokies at 24.9 points a game, and the senior has also dished 4.1 assists. Jarrell Eddie tallies 12.1 points and 5.6 rebounds a contest.

The Hokies are 5-16 since starting the season 5-0, having lost 10 of their last 11 games. Virginia Tech will conclude the regular season slate next week at Duke and Wake Forest.
