CU’s Carnett, Fertig claim WVIAC honors

PRINCETON — Concord senior standout Shawnee Carnett has been selected as the WVIAC Female Athlete of the Week for a fifth consecutive time.

According to a press release, Carnett  ensured herself of a spot at the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships by running the 800-meters in an automatic qualifying time of 2:08.51 to lead the Concord University women's track and field team at the Virginia Tech Challenge.

In addition to being a school record, Carnett's time is currently the second fastest 800-meter mark in all of the Division II, trailing only Simon Fraser’s Helen Crofts (2:07.34).

Jeff Fertig won the award for a second time this season, meeting the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the high jump at the Virginia Tech Challenge. Fertig cleared 2.06 meters to finish third in the high jump.

The mark, which was 0.04 meters above the NCAA provisional standard, ties Fertig for 15th in the nation and was just 0.01 meters off of his current Concord record jump of 2.07 meters.

Fertig’s 2.06 meter ranks first in the WVIAC this year by 0.17 meters.

With just one more weekend to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, Concord will send athletes to the Denison Last Chance Meet on Friday and George Mason Last Chance Meet on Sunday.
