Sophomore Samuel Ouedraogo grabbed an ARSC Arena record-setting 19 rebounds but wasn’t enough to help the Bluefield State men’s basketball team as they were defeated 111-72 by nationally-ranked no. 4 West Liberty University Monday night.
Treon Claiborne and Detterance Norwood led the Big Blues (2-17, 2-13 WVIAC) with 18 points apiece. Norwood came off the bench and scored his 18 in only 13 minutes of action.
The Hilltoppers (18-1, 12-1) with the No. 1 offense in the country featured a balanced offensive attack as they had five players record double-digit points led by Alex Falk with 16 points. Bubba Goodwin scored 14 while CJ Hester, Cedric Harris and Nick Brown contributed 12 points apiece.
The Big Blues return to action Saturday night when they travel to Institute to face conference rival West Virginia State.
Women's game: West Liberty 85, Bluefield State 50
The Lady Blues took an 11-point lead early in the first half at West Liberty, 23-12, but the host squad claimed a 31-28 halftime edge on Hillary Southworth’s two buckets in the last two minutes prior to intermission.
The Hilltoppers (12-5, 10-3) then outscored Bluefield State 54-22 in the second half.
Shae Mebane had 14 points and 10 rebounds for BSC (10-8, 8-7) and Dragana Tomic had 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Charity Harris and Charlene Diggs each had three steals.
Southworth scored 26 points and Liz Flowers had 11 rebounds to pace West Liberty.
