Franklin boosts UVa past Miami

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Ataira Franklin’s all-around game boosted Virginia to its third win in its last four games, a 62-52 win over Miami on Sunday at the John Paul Jones Arena.

Franklin made six of her eight field-goal tries and was 3 for 3 from outside the three-point arc en route to 17 points. She also had five rebounds, four steals, and two assists for the Cavaliers (12-6, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference). Miami falls to 13-5, 4-3 in league play.

Virginia made 6 of 10 three-point tries. Two weeks previously, the Cavaliers were 2 of 13 from that distance in a 58-52 loss to the Hurricanes in Coral Gables, Fla.

Franklin and teammates China Crosby and Kelsey Wolfe hit consecutive three-pointers during a 10-0 run that gave the Cavaliers their first double-digit lead, 16-6. Franklin and Crosby extended a 36-25 halftime lead with a pair of jumpers to start the second half.

Miami chipped away at the lead, pulling within five, 51-46, with under six minutes left in the game. A layup by Wolfe and a three from Crosby restored a 10-point lead for Virginia.

Virginia coach Joanne Boyle said the team was able to put Thursday’s loss to North Carolina behind them.

“I’m really proud of my team, coming off the Carolina game and really responding,” she said. “They knew that this could be a signature win for us. I thought they did a really great job of taking care of the ball, executing and playing great defense.”

Crosby had 12 points, going 2-for-3 from three-point range, with four assists and three rebounds. Wolfe had 12 points with five rebounds. Telia McCall scored 13 points with eight rebounds and two assists.

“We knew this was going to be a very important game,” McCall said. “We had to come out in the first five minutes of the game pressing the gas pedal and just going. We knew that they were going to try to push forward and we stopped them. I was proud of my team.”
