Alabama women beat UVa in double overtime

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Virginia women’s basketball team lost for a second time season with free throws in the final seconds.

Alabama overcame a one-point deficit with 15 seconds left in the second overtime, making three free throws to defeat Virginia 73-70 on Friday afternoon at Coleman Coliseum.

Kelsey Wolfe led Virginia (6-4) with 16 points, while Simone Egwu added 11. Alabama (7-3) had four players in double figures, including Daisha Simmons with 22 points, along with seven rebounds.

Virginia forced the first overtime when Sarah Imovbioh made a layup with 29 seconds left in regulation. Shafontaye Myers was able to force a second extra period for Alabama by banking in a 3 with 1.1 seconds left on the clock.

"We are really disappointed," said Virginia head coach Joanne Boyle, at virginiasports.com. "This is the second time this has happened to us this year, the game being decided on the free throw line in the final seconds. First Syracuse and then here."

The game featured nine lead changes and 10 ties. The two teams combined for 46 fouls and 54 turnovers with neither team shooting better than 36 percent from the field. Virginia outrebounded Alabama 63-47.

Telia McCall led both teams with 12 rebounds for Virginia. Myers added 14 points for the Crimson Tide, while Meghan Perkins and Briana Hutchen tallied 10 apiece for Alabama.

Virginia will host the Cavalier Classic presented by Holiday Inn next Friday and Saturday in Charlottesville. Virginia will play Norfolk State, while Northern Illinois and Xavier will also be involved.

The Cavaliers return to ACC play on Jan. 3 against Virginia Tech.
