Concord splits pair at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE — The Concord University women's basketball team dropped a 77-70 decision Thursday night at West Virginia State.

Three players scored in double figures for Concord (2-5, 1-2 WVIAC) with Leslie Mack leading the way with a team-high 17 points.  Logan Castlebury added 15, while Tanisha Williams chipped in 12 points to go with a game-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

Allison Mullins grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots in addition to scoring three points. Castlebury and Jacqueline Kestner each pulled in five rebounds as well.

Concord shot 70.6 percent from the free throw line (24-34), but just 33.3 percent (21-for-63) from the floor. West Virginia State (2-0, 2-0 WVIAC) hit 75.0 percent of its foul shots (15-for-20) and 45.2 percent of its field goal try’s (28-for-62).

Concord returns home for a Dec. 3 game against Virginia Intermont. Tip-off at the Carter Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.


Concord 68, West Virginia State 62

INSTITUTE — Led by a career-high 25 points from senior forward Damien Tunstalle, the Concord University men’s basketball team went on the road to defeat West Virginia State University in West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

The win improves Concord’s record to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the WVIAC. The Yellow Jackets fell to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Tunstalle scored his points on 8-for-19 from the field, including a 5-for-12 performance from three point range, while also going a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line. He also added five rebounds two assists and one steal to his stat line.

Sophomore forward Jordan Davis just missed a double-double with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Fellow sophomore Mike Boyd passed out seven assists, scored six points and grabbed four rebounds from the point guard position.

Sophomore guard Thomas Brown, who was made his third consecutive start, was one of three players, along with senior guard Eric Bailey and sophomore guard Paul Byrd to score five points. Bailey and Brown combined to register 10 rebounds (six for Bailey and four for Byrd).

Senior forward Gentry Shrewsbury battled down low and came away with a season-high seven rebounds.

Concord will host West Virginia Tech on Dec. 3.
