McKenzie Akers debuts for Marshall

HUNTINGTON — Princeton’s McKenzie Akers played 23 minutes in her first college game for Marshall University on Monday night.

The true freshman guard scored six points, going 2 for 11 from three-point range, as the Thundering Herd beat Kentucky Christian 78-29 in an exhibition contest at the Cam Henderson Center.

She also had two rebounds, two assists and two turnovers.

Junior forward Leah Scott (Detroit, Mich.) contributed 23 points and five rebounds in her first appearance as a member of the Thundering Herd in a 78-29 victory for Marshall women’s basketball over Kentucky Christian, Monday evening at Cam Henderson Center.

Marshall started the game with a 10-0 run and never looked back. The first half ended with the score at 45-18, and the Herd kept its feet on the gas, allowing only 11 second-half points. KCU ended the game with a 20 percent field goal percentage and committed 27 turnovers, off which the Herd scored 34 points.

The Herd put up 44 points in the paint to KCU’s 10, and senior forward Suporia Dickens (Freeport, Ill.) was one point away from a double-double, grabbing 15 rebounds and nine points. With all 13 active roster players participating, the Herd scored 32 bench points. Newcomer Aja Sorrells (Athens, Ga.) led all bench players with 13 points and eight rebounds in her first appearance.

Marshall ended the game with a 59-38 advantage on the boards and went 7-8 from the charity stripe, contributing to the overall final score of 78-29.

Next, Marshall opens the regular season by playing host to Bluefield College in an 11:30 a.m. game at Cam Henderson Center, Friday.
