College briefs: Former CU football coach passes

BLUEFIELD — Dr. W. Don Williams, former head football coach at Concord College (now University), died on Wednesday. A native of Yukon, W.Va., he coached the first Concord teams to win the WVIAC football championship, in 1962 and 1966. As a student, he was an all-conference tackle for the Mountain Lions. He also served as physical education department chair at Marshall University.

The Concord University football team landed two players on the Daktronics Inc. All-Super Region 1 Team. Senior safety Davon Marion (left) earned first team honors and senior linebacker Jake Lilly (below) received second team accolades. Marion recorded 63 tackles, six tackles for loss and a career-high five interceptions. Lilly led Concord in tackles for a third consecutive season after making 118 stops in addition to five forced fumbles, seven tackles for loss and one interception.

Concord University soccer midfielder Ryan Forde has been named to the Continental Tire / National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Atlantic Region. Forde finished the season ranked second in the Mountain East Conference with eight goals. He finished fifth in the league in total points with 17. This is the third postseason honor for the Harrow, England-native. In November he was selected to the All-MEC first team before being named to the Daktronics Atlantic All-Region second team.
