Skyhawks hammer Bluefield College

VALLEY, Ala. — Point made its point on Saturday afternoon, hammering Bluefield College 57-28 in the season-opener for both teams.

Two second-year programs met in this one, with the Skyhawks scoring 35 unanswered points to start the game before the Rams narrowed the margin to 35-7 at halftime.

Point quickly scored three more times in the second half, finishing with 487 offensive yards to 282 for the Rams, who were making their debut under first year head coach Ordell Walker.

Rufas Mason led the Skyhawks (1-0) with 226 yards and three touchdowns, while Kier Houston completed 9 of 18 passes for 153 yards and two more scores.

Mason put Point up to stay just 3:50 into the game on a 16-yard run. It was Mason again on the next possession, catching a 19-yard scoring pass from Houston, who also had a 5-yard run for a 21-0 lead after the first quarter.

It was more of the same in the second, with Mason connecting with a 35-yard scoring toss to William Eichman. The lead grew to 35-0 when Jeremy Uzee hit Anthony Armstrong from 5 yards out.

Bluefield got on the board with 2:08 left in the half on a 65-yard run by Armani Ford. The Rams opened the third quarter with another score on a 45-yard pass from Josh Erby to Richard Johnson.

Point answered with a pair of scoring runs from 3 and 89 yards by Mason. Point was able to sandwich a 30-yard punt return for a score by Leroy Kelly around a pair of late Bluefield scores.

Harris scored from four yards out, and former Graham standout Lamont Edwards finished the scoring with a 1-yard plunge. James Oliver converted four extra points for the Rams.

Erby completed just 4 of 19 pass attempts for 104 yards and a touchdown. Ford, a reserve quarterback, led the Rams on the ground with 88 yards and a score, while Harris added 76 yards and joined Ford with a touchdown apiece.

Richard Johnson caught three passes for 101 yards and a touchdown for Bluefield. Ernest Moore had a game-high nine tackles, while Frank Brooks added eight for the Rams.

Bluefield returns to action on Saturday at Pikeville. The Bears upset FCS foe Morehead State earlier in the week to open the season with a 1-0 mark.
