Cavaliers put up 9 straight runs to beat Hokies

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Virginia Tech Hokies led Virginia 2-0 in the third inning Saturday, only to have the Cavaliers score the rest of the runs and take a 9-2 win at Davenport Field, clinching the weekend ACC series.

Virginia (22-4, 9-2 ACC), ranked second nationally, secured its eighth straight conference home series.

Brendon Hayden gave the Hokies (12-1-1, 5-6) the lead with a two-run home run, his fifth of the season, which scored Mark Zagunis, who had singled and stole second.

For Hayden, it was the start of a 3 for 4 day that also included a walk and a double.

But Virginia Tech was 1 for 11 overall with runners in scoring position, and left 13 runners on base.

Virginia used a five-run fourth inning to take the lead. The Cavaliers knocked Hokies starter Sean Keselica from the game in the fourth inning while sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring five times.

Joe McCarthy homered into the right-field bleachers on the first pitch of the fifth inning. He ended the day 3 for 4 with a double, the homer, four RBI and two runs scored.

Virginia extended its lead to 9-2 in the sixth inning with three runs after loading the bases with none out.

Virginia freshman reliever Connor Jones picked up the win and improved to 4-0 on the year with 4 2/3 innings of scoreless innings of relief. He gave up three hits and a walk and struck out three. Jones now has thrown 16 shutout innings of relief in conference play.

Keselica (2-1) was saddled with the defeat after giving up four runs, two of them earned, four hits and a walk in 3 1/3 innings.

First pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. today in the series finale in Charlottesville.
